چکیده
This set of lectures provides an overview of the basic theory and phenomenol-ogy of the cosmic microwave background. Topics include a brief historical review; the physics of temperature and polarization fluctuations; acoustic oscillations of the primordial plasma; the space of inflationary cosmological models; current and potential constraints on these models from the microwave background; and constraints on inflation. These lectures were given at the Italian Society of Gravitational Physics Summer School " Relativistic Cosmology: Theory and Observation " in Como, Italy (May 2000).

If the universe is multiply-connected and sufficiently small, then the last scattering surface wraps around the universe and intersects itself. Each circle of intersection appears as two distinct circles on the microwave sky. The present article shows how to use the matched circles to explicitly reconstruct the global topology of space.

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) is a high energy particle physics experiment that will study cosmic rays in the ∼ 100 MeV to 1 TeV range and will be installed on the International Space Station (ISS) for at least 3 years. A first version of AMS-02, AMS-01, flew aboard the space shuttle Discovery from June 2 to June 12, 1998, and collected 10 8 cosmic ray triggers. Part of the Mir space...

The last years have been an exciting period for the field of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) research. With recent CMB balloon-borne and ground-based experiments we are entering a new era of ’precision’ cosmology that enables us to use the CMB anisotropy measurements to constrain the cosmological parameters and test new theoretical scenarios.

The Cosmic Background Imager (CBI) is a 13-element interferometer designed to image intrinsic anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) on arcminute scales. A review of the capabilities of the instrument is presented, together with a discussion of observations which have been taken over the past 9 months from the Atacama desert of Chile. We present preliminary high-resolution mosaic...
